News – it doesn’t have to be ALL or NONE

by Jennifer Fournier | Apr 29, 2021 | Jesus In Our Daily Life

Care to share? Are you keeping up with the news? I was on the phone with one of my girlfriends, having a marathon chat for three hours and at some point between covid vaccines and weight watchers tips my friend asked, “So, are you keeping up with the news...

Saying Yes to Jesus’ Invitation Isn’t Easy

by Jennifer Fournier | Apr 8, 2021 | Faith, Jesus In Our Daily Life

Care to share?Friends, Happy Easter. I must admit that Holy Week took the stuffing right out of me, as my mom would say. I am still working to recharge my batteries but I want to briefly share some thoughts with you. On Easter Sunday, after dinner was done and the...

Retreat Reflection: New Found Light After The Struggle

by Jennifer Fournier | Apr 1, 2021 | Faith, Jesus In Our Daily Life

Care to share?Out of Place on Retreat I felt so out of place; like a fish in a tree. That is what I told the women during a quiet reflection on the last night of our retreat together. I was so far out of the warm waters I like to swim in that it felt like an ice bath...

What Happens When We Say I Love You?

by Jennifer Fournier | Mar 18, 2021 | Jesus In Our Daily Life, Love

Care to share? She said she loved him. When Emma was in the fourth grade she told a boy, her best friend, and first crush, that she loved him. I thought it was sweet but the boy’s parents did not. While Michael and I were volunteering for the hundredth pancake...

Care to share?Rae Dunn Love Plaque A few days ago I was in my study, eating an ice cream bar (Weight Watchers, mind you. The pandemic pounds are coming off, people!). I was looking at a heart-shaped plaque hanging on the wall above my desk. It’s a dusty pink...

HI, I’M JEN

“Walk in love as Christ loved us. Ephesians 5:2 (ESV) This is the basis of my writing; to make walking in love just a little easier and a whole lot more routine in our lives.”

As a Christian woman who practices in the Episcopal Church, I want to be clear:

Christian Identity is not American Identity.

American Identity is not Christian Identity.

God did not choose the current President for us because He approves of his policies.

The current President is not a prophet.

The current President is nothing like Jesus.

Further:
There aren’t any second class religions.

The US is not a Christian state.

The enmeshment of politics and the conservative right-wing evangelical church is wrong and destructive to democracy.

************
Following Jesus and the way of love means standing up against violence, bigotry, hate crimes, inequality, and oppression. Nothing that happened in the last week , or the last four years, was a demonstration of Jesus’ teaching. It was a master class in hatred, greed, power, wealth, ego, privilege, and insecurity. All of which Jesus preached against.

I do not stand with Christian Nationalists and neither does Christ.

I hope you won’t either.

“And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son,[a] full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 NRSV

On this day,

May those who are alone find comfort in God’s presence.

May those who are emotionally worn down hear the Holy Spirit gently guiding them.

May those who haven’t found God yet, discover Him in the mystery of Jesus’ birth.

May those who walk in love, work with our neighbors on the margins, and have dedicated themselves to mission driven lives remember to nap, as Jesus did, in order to care for their own bodies and minds.

And may all of the parents and caregivers who have been up since the early morning hours, because Santa came, be blessed with strong coffee and open hearts to see the wonder and magic in the eyes of their children. For in that wonder is deep and unwavering faith which is, after all, what this day is about.

Dec 23

Open
Oh how I miss singing in church! My favorite hymns come into prayerful life when we sing as a congregation. Until that day when we are in person, flipping pages in the hymnal to sing in or out of tune, I will continue to find my favorites and sing them on my own.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed trinity!

2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed trinity!

I always love reading about the wise men and wondering who they really were. Did they come promptly after Jesus’ birth? Was their visit a year or two later? What gifts did they bring? Did Mary ask them to stay for dinner or were the gifts kindly accepted and the men sent on their way? Where they really wise and if so what #wisdom did they possess?

Frankly we are never going to know the answers. But I think if they followed a star, immediately knew the baby in front of them was the Son of God and recalculated their Waze app to go home by another way, that makes them wise in my book.
